A Medicines Use Review (MUR) aims to help you better understand the medicines you take, how they work and what they do.
It is a free service, funded by the NHS, which involves having a private consultation of around 15- 20 minutes, with the Pharmacist, focusing on how you use your medicines. The aim of the review is to help you better understand the medicines you take, how they work and what they do. It will also help your Pharmacist identify any problems you may be experiencing such as side effects or interactions with other medicines.
If you are taking more than one regular medicine, or are taking medication for a chronic condition and have been getting your prescriptions from us for more than the previous three months, ask a member of our pharmacy team for your Medicines Use Review. Your Pharmacist may be able to complete your Medicines Use Review whilst your medicines are being dispensed. If this is not possible they can arrange a convenient time for you to call back.
You will need to provide a list of all of the medicines you take. Include medicines that your doctor has prescribed and ones you buy from the pharmacy or elsewhere (this includes vitamins, supplements). This will help our Pharmacist to give you the best possible advice.
Many people take medicines, most of them without any concern or ill effects. The NHS recommends that certain groups of customers may benefit from having an annual Medicines Use Review:
Medicines can occasionally cause side effects, such as headaches, coughing, or breathlessness. Sometimes, one medicine may affect another medicine to create side effects. Some medicines can be difficult to use and require a certain technique to get the best from them and some people may find it difficult to take their medicines due to packaging they are provided in. The aim of the MUR is to ensure that the medicines you take are right for you, that you are taking them correctly, and so getting the maximum benefit from them. This includes assessing whether you should be taking fewer medicines or need to change any of your medicines.
This is an NHS service designed to complement the reviews you have with your GP. None of your medicines will be altered without the agreement of you and your GP.
Most MURs will take place in a consultation room. This facility provides you with the privacy to discuss your medicines freely and openly, without being overheard. You also have the opportunity to bring a family member or friend along with you, if you feel this would make your visit more comfortable. Please let the Pharmacist know before you visit if you wish to bring someone with you.
During your Medicines Use Review
Our Pharmacist will have an informal discussion with you about your medicines – what you know about them, when and how you take them. You might also be asked other questions, as follows:
Possible questions that you may wish to ask:
Head lice, Athletes foot, Dhobie itch, Vaginal thrush, Diarrhoea
We can arrange your medication into weekly or monthly blister packs to make taking your medication easier to take.

It is important that you take the right dose of your prescribed medicines at the right time each day to get the most from your medicines to control your condition as much as possible. This can sometimes be difficult if you take more than one medicine. One way in which this can be made easier is for your medicines to be supplied in a Monitored Dosage System, which provides you with a separate compartment for each dosage time of the day. Our Pharmacist can help identify which patients this type of system would be suitable for. MDS may be suitable for patients in the following circumstances:
You have a carer who helps you to ensure you take your medicines correctly Our MDS service takes the stress out of medicine taking. We can offer a variety of medication systems to help you take your medications and can manage the whole process for you so that your medications are ordered from your surgery, dispensed and delivered to you or your carers.
We work closely with care agencies, carers, Drs and family members to ensure that our patient’s needs are met.
Ask a member of our pharmacy team about whether this service would benefit you or whether there is another course of action, which may be of more help.
We are able to offer FREE Flu jabs to eligible patients this winter.
The Flu Vaccination Service is the provision of a flu vaccine, administered by a specially trained Pharmacist, to help prevent you catching flu.
The Flu Vaccination Service is suitable for most adults. If you are interested in receiving the service, your Pharmacist will take you through a short series of questions to ensure that it is suitable before giving the vaccination.
Flu (or winter influenza) is an acute respiratory viral infection caused by an influenza virus. The virus can affect anyone in any age group. Influenza usually occurs in winter months, from October to April in the UK. For the majority of people, flu is unpleasant but not life threatening. However, for some people, complications can result in more serious illness, such as bronchitis or pneumonia. The influenza virus is highly contagious. It can be passed from person to person either through airborne transmission (for example when someone coughs or sneezes) or by touching someone or something, which is contaminated with the virus. Signs and symptoms of flu include general aches and pains, shivering, cough, sneezing raised temperature and fatigue/weakness.
Lifelong immunity to the influenza virus is virtually impossible to achieve and therefore an annual vaccination is required to provide protection from the disease. Ask a member of the pharmacy team for further information about our flu vaccination service or to arrange an appointment with the Pharmacist.
Our fully trained Pharmacist will offer a user-friendly, non-judgmental, client-centred and confidential service. We can provide access to sterile needles and syringes, and sharps containers for return of used equipment. Where agreed locally, associated materials, for example condoms, citric acid and swabs, to promote safe injecting practice and reduce transmission of infections by substance misusers will be provided. Used equipment is normally returned by the service user for safe disposal. We can provide support and advice to the user, including referral to other health and social care professionals and specialist drug and alcohol treatment services where appropriate.
We can dispense for and cater all the needs of care and nursing homes.
Cowley Pharmacy believes in being able to provide a service tailored to the needs of each Care Home. We provide advice and support to the residents and staff of care homes, including delivery of medicines. We will advise on the proper and effective ordering of medicines and appliances as well as their safe storage, administration and proper record keeping.
We provide a dispensing service to suit the needs of the Care Home, whether that is dispensing into standard containers or into Monitored Dosage Systems (MDS). Clinical Governance is the framework that ensures that we are both accountable for, and able to continuously improve our standards. This is an essential part of delivering modern health services to Care Homes, and is central to the service Cowley Pharmacy provides.
We know it takes more than dispensing prescriptions for your medication system to run smoothly. Our Prescription Management Service ensures the streamlining of prescriptions, within legal and ethical guidelines, to facilitate dispensing and the provision of suitable MDS systems. This ensures that the Care Home receives enough medication for residents in suitable quantities, making administration and record keeping easier and helping you keep up to date with residents' medication.
We believe that to ensure your residents receive the best possible care, it is essential to work together as a team. Where possible, you will have your own designated contact. Likewise, we recommend there should be at least one designated person in the Home we can contact to resolve issues as they arise and help ensure continuity.
Your medication can be delivered in an agreed format on a set day, with the same being true for collecting the empty cassettes or racks (where appropriate). Dates and times to suit everyone will be agreed. Our Pharmacists will be happy to discuss any further requirements on an individual basis.
